The sophomore LP from California rock 'n' roll band SPICE - expands their palette of damaged anthems and addictive poetics with a more powerful, visceral sound distilled from years in the trenches of bands, breakups and breakdowns. Viv continues the upward trajectory SPICE set with their self-titled debut and the 2021 7inch "A Better Treatment ". "Viv" begins with a bang, showing SPICE at their stormy, weather-beaten best, with booming drums and East Bay riffs erupting in a landslide of rapture, regret and bruising melodies.
The album's first single, "Any Day Now," shows off the group's pop potential. But what connects and ignites these songs across different energies and arrangements is their specific sense of emotion. Roughness refined into reckonings that approach the truth, born of cold mornings, bad luck and too many wrong turns. Waking up where you shouldn't be, living a life you don't know. The mix, produced by Jack Shirley and mixed and mastered by Sam Pura in Oakland, strikes that rare balance where each element is highlighted yet distinct, with voices, strings and drums each given space to tread parallel paths.
